Character Information
Character: Charles Xavier
Canon: X-Men movies & the end of Days of Future Past
Age: 41
History: Link
Possessions: His clothes, he will need a new wheelchair.
Weapon: He is his own weapon. Plus he would refuse to use one anyway.
Powers/Abilities: I don't want to note this in every single part of his powers so everything involving his abilities that can affect other people in-game will only be used with permission from them. I will have him use it on the basic NPCs but not any major ones without asking for it officially. I have an opt-out created for players to reply to.
Charles is one of the most powerful telepaths in his world and has a variety of psionic power abilities. The most obvious is that he can read people's minds very easily and not always intentionally. It's somewhat of a curse since he has trouble sleeping with too many minds out there in the world constantly speaking to him. He can read minds from towns away and passively with anyone around him, although he has worked on shields to protect his loved ones from his accidental snooping.
Charles can alter a person's mind and awareness, he can make them think they're seeing a friend or an enemy or anything else in front of their eyes. He could convince an entire platoon to turn against each other in seconds. He can freeze people where they stand and not allow them to move a muscle, gaining control over their bodies. He can wipe people's memories entirely and implant his own.
Charles can make himself invisible to people by altering their mind. He can put people to sleep/knock them out. He can create mental links with his closest companions so they can communicate swiftly with each other over long distances. He can create mental illusions. He can put mental shields up in other people's minds like he did with Jean Grey. He can resist psychic attacks against himself and protect his loved ones from other mindreaders.
Along with his ability to read and manipulate minds, Charles is empathic and he feels people's feelings as well. Their pain and misery, their joy and sadness, all of it bleeds through their brains and he absorbs it. It's what makes it easier for him everyone as people and sympathize with everyone. It's difficult not to care about the world around him when he understands where people are coming from and their inner workings. This can be difficult for him though as when thoughts are very loud or emotions run high, it can overwhelm him and cause him pain and turmoil too. It's a balancing act for him to try to stay sane and be able to live his life without constantly absorbing everyone around him.
In X-2, Charles was able to hurt and nearly kill all the mutants reached out to through Cerebro through sheer mind control and power. This was amplified through Cerebro, but he can conceivably do that at a smaller level any time he wants, and wipe out smaller numbers around him. THIS WILL BE ENTIRELY NERFED. HE IS NOT GOING TO MURDER GROUPS OF PEOPLE LOL.
Outside of powers, Charles is a genius-level intellect, he can speak almost any language, he's a master geneticist and a scientist (up to 1970s), and a skilled leader of teams. He is a gifted teacher which he cares a great deal about.
Application Questions
Who is the most important person in their life and why? What might be different if this person hadn't been around?
Raven Darkholme is the most important person in Charles's life and this was proven in Days of Future Past. While his relationship with Erik Lehnsherr is very profound and life-long, it is his deep love for his adopted sister that breaks him out of his addiction and depression in an effort to save her from herself. He then does whatever he can to protect her from Erik and then acknowledges she must make her own choice about Trask, begging her on a personal level to be her best self.
Raven and Charles met when they were children and she came to steal from his house. He invited her to stay and be his sister, and they grew up together. She was his constant companion and he took her everywhere he went. Charles struggled with seeing her in her blue form and encouraged her to blend in to suit humanity, but he's since realized the folly in that. Charles came to understand that he thought of himself as 'raising her' as if he was her parent, rather than her peer, and some of their issues stem from that unequal ground between the two of them. In the end, he apologized for trying to control her during her life and put the choice in her hands what to do, respecting her as an individual and an adult. And that led to her doing the right thing.
Losing Raven was devastating to Charles, and if she had stayed instead of leaving with Erik, he might not have gone down such a dark path for those years afterward. His love for her has never changed and a great deal of his pain stemmed from being without her. He misses her and wishes she was back in his life, but understands they're both on their own journeys right now.
Without Raven, Charles would be very different, because having a loving and supportive family member really helped his empathy grow. If he was alone his whole life with his own thoughts and powers, he might have had a more difficult time connecting to people and being willing to listen to them. He might have been more disconnected from humanity. Instead he grew up with a sibling who he could put his love and devotion into and it made him a better person. Always concerning himself with someone else's needs is essential to who he becomes later.
Is there an event in your character's life that they'd do differently? How so and why?
Charles has many regrets but he has replayed in his mind many, many ways he would have handled the beach scene with Erik differently. When they had a stand off with the military, he feels like he didn't say the right things in order to get his friend to stop, and in doing so sent him away and got shot in the spine. He regrets heavily what led to the loss of his legs and also when Erik and Raven leave him there bleeding on the sand.
(Note to self: saying "they're just following orders" isn't helpful when talking to someone who survived the Nazis.)
His regrets stem from not being able to reach either of them so they got to the point they had to leave, especially Raven. He didn't see that she was going through her own struggles and that he'd never helped her see herself as beautiful or given her pride. Right before that important moment, Charles had made the choice to hold Shaw in place so Erik could kill him and felt him die mentally, something that was traumatizing to Charles so he was in a bad and unsettled place for the confrontation afterward. He blames himself for all of it going wrong, although he blames Erik just as much for the obvious reasons.
Charles goes on to blame himself too for the loss of his students during the war and that he wasn't a strong enough leader to make the dream work. The dream lives or dies on his actions, and for a long time, he was simply not capable of making it work. In many ways this is just a continuation of his original regrets because he feels he failed to reach his loved ones and then kept doing it with others.
What's the greatest challenge you foresee your character facing in the setting?
Charles has always lived comfortably and he was born rich. He is used to being in control of his life and having his mansion and the resources he needs to follow his dreams. Eventually that led to building a school for mutants within his space, and that was his intention at the canon point he was taken from. He knew that in the future this is what his fate was and he was ready to meet it. But he'll be ripped away from that dream and that comfort here and forced to learn how to survive without anything to his name. And without the purpose he felt secure about, since he doesn't need to save mutantkind in this world. Figuring out what to do with his life is going to be an uphill battle.
With several other X-Men planning on apply, and his relationship with Logan, he will have a support system who will not make this easy, but will certainly smooth out his biggest problems. Exploring out who he is without all of his privileges and his big picture goals will be very difficult for him. I want him to find his passion for life again and for other things like science and technology, and the parts that made him so hopeful and optimistic once upon a time. He'll never be the man he was when it all began, but finding a way to become an in-between from there to his future will be something he strives for. We'll see if it succeeds!
What's the easiest thing you foresee your character adapting to in the setting?
While seeking purpose will be difficult, Charles does have some things going for him. He is very good with people and gets along well with others. He's comfortable working with a community and creating teams, and he'll want to band together with the others. Once he gets over himself, he'll see there is a life to be made here, even if it's not the one he was hoping for. Also he's very curious about new places and people. He will find the overall strangeness of this world fascinating and may be interested in going out in the world and learning more about it. He won't do this alone so he'll want to make connections to other people so he can go out on team missions to explore and learn more about the storms.
I hope to eventually find a way for him to teach again within the confines of the setting, not sure how yet but that'll likely be a player plot down the road. It's such an essential part to who he is and what he's passionate about that it would be interesting to sort of pave a way for a different version of it. I think if he meets anyone who is struggling with their powers, he'll still want to help them learn, regardless of whether they're a mutant. He doesn't care about that specific quality, he in general likes to help others. He's a genuine altruistic person and needs to remember that.
